GRAFTED TOMATOES

Something new we are trying out this year is Grafted Tomatoes. We will be trialing four different varieties: Mortgage Lifter, San Marzano, Brandywine Pink, and Brandywine Red. For those of you who do not know, a grafted tomato is the result of fusing an heirloom tomato plant with a newer hybrid plant. By doing this, the hybrid helps the heirloom be more vigorous, disease resistant, and bountiful. To see how they’re doing so far, see the pictures below.

Mortgage Lifter produces heirloom beeftsteak tomatoes averaging around 2 1/2 pounds. It matures in 80 days in the full sun and grows about 36-40 inches tall.

San Marzano has thick and meaty flesh that is perfect for sauces or pastes. It’s an indeterminate roma type that matures in 80 days. It grows about 40-48 inches in the full sun.

Brandywine Pink is a large, beefsteak-shaped tomato. It matures in 85 days in the full sun and grows about 40-48 inches tall.

Brandywine Red produces deep-red fruits averaging 2 lbs. It matures in 80-100 days. Indeterminate.

Calendula Ball’s Orange

Ball Seed has come out with a new Calendula they call Ball’s Orange. It grows 12 to 24 inches tall and produces deep orange, double blooms. The flower is about 3 inches wide. We planted some in one of our gardens here at Langridge to see how they do in our unpredictable Louisiana weather. We think they look great, but see for yourself and share your opinion!

Louisiana Fall Super Plants of 2012

The Fall list of LA Super Plants is a good one! The Sorbet Viola, the Conversation Piece Azalea, and the Evergreen Sweetbay Magnolia top the charts this year as the best plants to grow during the Fall in Louisiana. The Violas and Azaleas can be found right here at Langridge Plant Sales. The Violas are similar to the look of Pansies, but they produce a much smaller flower. The bright colors and appetizing names like Lemon Blueberry Swirl will have everyone wanting to add these beauties to their gardens! They are a cool season annual that love the sun and grow to be about 6 inches tall.

The Conversation Piece Azalea is the best of the best when it comes to Azaleas. This beautiful shrub blooms different shades of pink flowers that can be about 4 inches across. It blooms heavily in the Spring and Fall to add great color to your garden. They can grow between 2-5 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide in part sun to part shade.

Check out the LSU AgCenter’s website for more information on the Louisiana Super Plants for this season and past seasons.
